Redlands Bowl: History, Culture, Community

In the charming city of Redlands, a captivating tradition springs to life every summer. Welcome to the Redlands Bowl, a timeless haven for music and culture, where the spirit of community thrives and admission is always free. In this blog post, we embark on a captivating journey to unearth the essence of this exceptional event and the organization behind its enduring magic.

A Legacy of Harmony

The year was 1923 when the Redlands Community Music Association was birthed from the visionary dream of a local resident named Grace Stewart Mullen. Mullen’s dedication to the arts and her fervent passion for music led to the inception of something extraordinary. Just a year later, in 1924, her vision materialized as the inaugural season of music concerts graced Smiley Park.

At its inception, a modest bandstand shell stood to the east of the present site, nestled near the Lincoln Memorial Shrine. Yet, fueled by Grace’s unwavering dedication, the Redlands Community Music Association gathered donations throughout the year, cultivating the foundation for an annual summer music festival.

A Crescendo of Generosity

Fast forward to 1929, a pivotal year for the Redlands Bowl, as local philanthropists Florence R. and Clarence G. White, recent transplants to Redlands, extended their generosity to the community. Their gift was nothing short of remarkable – an exquisite bandstand amphitheater, aptly named “The Prosellis,” a Latin term signifying “before the seats.”

Designed by the skilled native architect, Herbert J. Powell, The Prosellis was meticulously conceived to harmonize with the distinct architecture of the nearby AK Smiley Public Library. Upon the stage, a profound inscription adorns the amphitheater – Proverbs 29:18, a timeless verse reminding us of the transformative power of vision. “Without vision, a people perish” serves as an eternal reminder of the role vision plays in nurturing a flourishing community.

Beneath the Stars and Melodies

The Redlands Bowl proudly boasts the distinction of being the oldest continuously operating summer music festival in the United States without an admission fee. Each summer, over 100,000 individuals converge beneath the twinkling night sky to immerse themselves in the enchantment of the performing arts.

This hallowed venue has witnessed countless hearts and minds captivated by its allure, forging memories that endure a lifetime. From orchestral symphonies to the entrancing realm of opera, from the rhythmic cadence of dance performances to the vibrant tapestry of musical theater, the Redlands Bowl Summer Music Festival offers an eclectic blend of cultural experiences, catering to a diverse and multi-generational audience.
